Twilight

16” x 20”

Oil

1997

One of my first pieces, I use the same lighting as I do in Selva Negra.  This painting is meant to have a soothing effect, depicting night at its calmest.

Based on a photograph I saw in an old National Geographic, this woman’s eyes struck me.  While I think the issue was talking about Afghanistan, I have entitled the piece Roma, which is the name the gypsies call themselves.  The newsprint, which are strips from the classified ads, seems to imprison her yet her penetrating stare breaks all barriers.
